LMF ALPACA FEEDS

MAJOR CONCERNS OF FEEDING ALPACA

Because of the extremely efficient energy metabolism of alpaca, the feeding program must be managed to avoid obesity.

Regardless of the body condition of alpacas, their primary mineral, trace mineral and vitamin requirements remain the same. This means that even if supplemental grain concentrate is not required due to a good quality forage, mineral and vitamin fortification requirements still need to be kept at optimum levels.

With the choice between LMF Alpaca Developer and LMF Alpaca Reduced Calorie, all fortification needs can be met, whether body condition is excellent or if the animal is overweight.

Bone and joint development of cria requires adequate calcium and phosphorus intake, along with proper levels of trace minerals. Those needs are taken into account in the LMF Alpaca feeds.

Maintaining adequate fiber while meeting energy and protein needs is critical. Feeding too high a quality forage can cause as many problems as feeding a poor quality forage. Medium bloom grass hay or mixed medium bloom grass/later bloom alfalfa best meet these criterion. Extremely early cut grass or alfalfa should be avoided (due to excess calories and protein with too low fiber), as should very late cut grass hays (due to insufficient calorie and protein content, resulting in poor body function and condition.
